Stock the Shelves Event at the Flemingdon Food Bank's New Location
Date: Thursday, May 21, 2009
Time: 2:00p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Place: 10 Gateway Blvd, Toronto
TORONTO (May 19 2009)
The Flemingdon Anglican Ministry, who has taken the sole responsibility of operating the Flemingdon Food Bank for the last five years, recently received an unexpected eviction notice due to a redevelopment of the Flemingdon Plaza. This crisis pulled the Thorncliffe and Flemingdon communities together to find a solution as all agreed that the community could not afford to lose the food bank.
After numerous community consultations facilitated by local elected representatives MP Rob Oliphant, MPP Kathleen Wynne, and Councillor John Parker, an agreement was reached and the food bank’s immediate future was secured by local community leaders who will soon form a collective multi-faith community organization that will serve the Thorncliffe and Flemingdon area. This new organization’s responsibilities will include food security and essential community services.
The food bank’s new home is located at 10 Gateway Blvd in the Flemingdon Health Centre. It will join an existing community “hub” that includes the Health Centre, New Circles Clothing Bank, and Flemingdon Neighborhood Services. This location will ultimately serve as a “one-stop-shop” to those in need.
Please join us on May 21, 2009 and support the food bank by bringing non-perishable items such as cooking oil, baby food, peanut butter, dried beans/lentils, flour, diapers, tomato paste, halal meat, rice, tuna, cereal, pasta or a $2 donation.
